2019-2020 Legal Advocacy Fellowship
Compassion Over Killing (COK) is seeking a Legal Advocacy Fellow for a one-year paid position beginning in late summer 2019 (starting date flexible; possibility of moving into staff position post-fellowship). Compassion Over Killing is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal advocacy organization. Working to end animal abuse since 1995, COK focuses on ending and preventing cruelty to animals in agriculture.
COK is offering its Legal Advocacy Fellowship out of its office in Washington, DC (with remote locations negotiable). The Legal Advocacy Fellow will work on and take ownership of litigation projects aimed at protecting farmed animals. These projects may employ a variety of legal theories, relating to areas such as false advertising and unfair competition laws, tort liability, and administrative law. The Fellow will also advise and support our Investigations Department in conducting and releasing undercover investigations of factory farms and slaughterhouses, and will facilitate pursuit of animal cruelty charges where they are warranted.
The Fellow will have opportunities to take initiative, develop ideas, and exercise discretion with regard to both novel and ongoing projects.
Excellent research and writing skills are required. In addition, applicants should be independent and creative thinkers who are interested in exploring novel approaches to protecting animals through litigation. Candidates with a background and interest in animal protection are preferred. Interested parties should apply with cover letter, resume, writing sample, list of three references, and law school transcript to Compassion Over Killing’s Legal Advocacy Program at legal@cok.net. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
